Literacy Volunteers are altruistic. They give back to their community in a way that is immeasurable. The time dedicated to help someone to read, to speak English, to better their lives, results in multigenerational advancement in lifelong learning and skills.

Literacy Volunteers are mentors, encouraging learners and building their confidence. They help to build self-esteem by guiding with care and patience.
Literacy Volunteers are adaptable, readily switching from helping an adult with job search to GED practice to citizenship.
Literacy Volunteers are dedicated, going beyond the minimum meeting requirement of six months. The average tutor works for more than one year, ensuring their learner meets their goals.
Literacy Volunteers are philomaths, opens a new window, their passion for studying and learning is passed on to each tutee they encounter.
Literacy Volunteers are community advocates, intrinsically increasing the reading, workforce and humanitarian efforts in their own backyards.

The Napa County Library Literacy Center currently has more than 62 learners throughout the county waiting to be helped with reading, writing, and speaking English. Each year, Literacy Volunteers contribute a total of 6,534 hours of tutoring, helping 134 learners reach their goals.
